New Beginnings: Self Hosting Plunge

New Beginnings: Self Hosting Plunge

Yikes – I’ve done it… I’ve taken the plunge to go Self Hosted and all being well, will be transferring from WordPress.com to WordPress.org within the next week.

I’m just hoping all goes smoothly with the transfer and that I don’t lose all the great connections I’ve built up with fellow bloggers over the last year.

Just in case, it would be brilliant if you could pop https://www.brilliancewithin.com into your search engine next week and subscribe on my new blog so that you received my email updates as they will no longer show on WP Reader…

It’s a bit of a scary move and I know that there were some fellow bloggers interested in doing the same thing and I’ll post on my new self hosted blog after it goes live to let you know of any pitfalls I encountered with the move.

In my research, a relative of mine put me onto https://www.pipdig.co/wordpress-setup/ who they’d used to set up their self hosted site. Pipdig will do the transfer for free if you purchase the ‘hosting site’ and the new blog layout via their links, which seems fair enough. I’ll be sure to let you know how successful this was after D-Day!

Being on WordPress.com has worked brilliantly for me over the last year and March was my 12 month blogging anniversary. I never expected to enjoy my journey as much as I have and that is thanks to the amazing bloggers I’ve met over the last year.

It’s time now though to raise my game and take a leap of faith. It’s worked in many other areas of my life over the last year and I’m sure this will work brilliantly too.

So – wish me luck – I’ve got all my fingers and toes crossed for a smooth transition. Once complete, it will be a tick off my Vision Board list as another success! (I’m thinking positive!)

Be sure to come and find me via: https://www.brilliancewithin.com once the transfer takes place sometime next week… If you don’t I’m going to be very lonely!

I’m so happy for you that you’ve used your vision boarding to accomplish this in one year. I’ve been blogging for two years now and have wanted to take the plunge to self hosting. What was the turning point for you? Did you reach a certain amount of followers? Please do tell. You have a great blog and your enthusiasm shows through

Thanks so much Lorna – what a lovely comment and it’s very much appreciated! I’d been mulling over self hosting for a few months and decided if I hit 1000 followers I’d take the plunge.. In the end, I did it via Pipdig and they made the process really easy. I was also doing a course which recommended adding the ‘opt in’ box and on the wordpress.com, I couldn’t add the box – only on the self hosted so that was the final deciding factor. Good luck!! xx

I am in the process of switching over to a self-hosted site (scary!!). Do you have any tips/advice on making the move more seamless?!

Hi Brittney ..great to meet you and I hope the move to self hosted goes well. In the end, I decided to use Pipdig who were brilliant and it made the transition very smooth. I’ve made a note of some of the extra bits that I needed to sort once the physical transfer had taken place. The main hiccup initially was that some posts didn’t transfer but as soon as I mentioned it to Pipdig, they resolved it within a couple of hours… it was as a result of a large video I’d got embedded I one of my posts. After he transfer is complete, you’ll need to ‘customise’ your site with brand colours etc. and that was fairly straightforward. I went for the Opulence theme via pipdig which I’m pretty happy with.. Feel free to ask me anything else and if I can help I will – I’m not very ‘tech savvy’ though… I just about ‘muddle through’… xx

So far so good with the transfer. I used a company called Pipdig and can highly recommend the ‘free’ transfer service they provide. You just need to link to the hosting company via their link £49 for the new layout which is very fair.. Any queries I’ve had have been responded to within just a few hours – brilliant service!

Excellant news. Your website address is still .com and not.org. will you post one more time on wordpress.com to let us your transfer has happened.. wow congrats you have been beavering away. Well done.

Thanks so much Bella – Yes my website address will be the same as I’d already got my own domain name on the Premium package when I first set up my blog. Because of that though I’m not quite sure whether it will let me post on wordpress after the domain has been redirected or not but I will definitely put something up if it lets me. Fingers xx

I love to read your comments... It's always great to start a conversation!
