What could be better after a day wandering around Cheltenham Travel Review: Wonderful Spa Break – Part 2 – Enjoy Life’s Imperfections, than to get dressed up for an evening of ‘fine dining’… and much to hubbies disgust, I had to take some ‘blog’ photo’s before we could ‘tuck in’!
Well… is it just me or does ‘fine dining’ leave something to be desired? The restaurant area at the hotel is lovely and the food is ‘award winning’. The staff were very attentive and listening to the other diners ‘ooo’s and ahh’s’ when there food arrived, how could there possibly be a problem?
However…… this is where the ‘traditional Mancunian’ comes out… Although I grew up with ‘fancy food’ as my mum was an amazing and very adventurous cook, I somehow never got the ‘foody adventurous spirit’ .. particularly when it comes to fish and ‘game’. I’m sure you’ll understand therefore that when I saw the menu, my heart sank…. Fish, fish, fish, Venison or Wood pigeon!
The food arrived and did look ‘very fancy’ and judging by the response of fellow diners around the restaurant, the food at The Greenway is ‘award winning’ however…. for me it fell slightly short – not because of the way it was cooked or presented but because it simply wasn’t to my ‘best taste’… It dawned on me that ‘fine dining’ doesn’t quite float my boat!
What’s your taste?
Hubby opted for the Asparagus Soup and Venison (he’s ‘mentally allergic’ to fish!)
Hubby loved the soup and the Venison was cooked perfectly…
I opted for the ham hock tagine for starter followed by the wood pigeon (which was a ‘virgin’ expedition into the unknown).
The ham hock was lovely and very substantial which was just as well because the ‘virgin wood pigeon expedition’ never got off the starting line!
The staff were very concerned that my plate was returned with both pigeon breasts pretty well ‘in tact’ (sorry little pigeon.. ) and later, I found I hadn’t been charged for my meal. Brilliant Result in terms of Customer Service if not so good for the little pigeon! (Why is it I can eat meat from pigs, chickens, lambs without too much question… but when it comes to pigeon – I felt BAD!)
On our second evening of our Spa Break at The Greenway, we opted for the Brasserie Menu, which wowed and definitely ‘hit the spot’ when it comes to flavour and presentation! I opted for one of my favourites… GOATS CHEESE… Foody Friday: Focus on Goat’s Cheese and it didn’t disappoint… it was delicious!
Hubby is concerned as he thinks I’ve become an ‘addict’! He’s right… apart from ‘bacon’ I think I could become a ‘Goatarian’ and live on goats cheese! Infact crispy bacon and goats cheese salad sounds perfect – I’m going to try it…
Sorry no pics for the Brasserie Meal… I was banned by hubby from taking my camera on our second night which I can understand as he’d had to put up with being snapped semi naked in the sauna and the showers…haha – watch out for Part 4 if I can ever work out how to get Movie Maker on my new Windows 10 laptop… from what I can gather off youtube this is an issue! – does anybody have any suggestions for getting around it?)
Being the best and most virtuous ‘healthy eater’, I opted for coffee and no desert on both nights – which wasn’t easy as the deserts did look amazing! Indeed I was ‘so good’ as I watched hubby devour bread and butter pudding on the second night and it did look divine.. he said it was the best he’d ever had!
So, for the purpose of adding something ‘sweet’, I’ve added some photo’s from our earlier ‘Afternoon Tea’ which I couldn’t retrieve on my new laptop when I wrote ‘part 1’ of this review…. Oh NO….
You thought I was being virtuous not having the pudding didn’t you…. Well this proves I wasn’t! Just don’t tell my Doctor! The not so perfect and VERY WICKED Wendy strikes again…
The ‘Ambience’ of a Country House Hotel Lounge is so ‘in keeping’ with a traditional ‘English Afternoon Tea’.. it just has to be done and for once (or twice).. blow the healthy eating options….
How do you eat your Scones? For me… jam first and then the clotted cream…. oh my goodness – that chocolate cake was the stickiest, gooiest, deliciousist.. cake ever!!! (yep – I know ‘deliciousist isn’t a real word… but don’t you wish it was?)
And for those of you who want to witness the full ‘Afternoon Tea’ and really start to drool, take a peak at the rest of the photo’s in the slide show below…
Are you a ‘Brasserie’ is best or a Fabulous ‘Fine Diner’? I’d love to know if it’s just me that’s a bit ‘simple’… when it comes to food obviously…
Please leave me a comment below – I’d love to hear from you!
If you are planning a Spa Break in the UK – I’d definitely check into The Greenway Hotel and Spa (no affiliation or freebies received for this recommendation!).. Here’s the link to their website.. http://www.thegreenwayhotelandspa.com/
