HELP! Has Anyone Gone Self-Hosted?

HELP! Has Anyone Gone Self-Hosted?

Well now I’ve set up my ‘blogging station’ and am determined to ‘get serious’ about my blog, I think it’s time for a more ‘professional look’ and redesign of my site and to possibly go self hosted which has been on of my blog goals for a while.

One day I feel like: “I CAN, I WILL, WATCH ME” and the next day I’m… “I Can’t… what if it all goes wrong”…

I originally set up on without understanding the future implications and not being sure anyway that blogging was for me. However, I’ve had a lovely 9 months connecting with some amazing people from around the World.

I’ve learned so many new things about the wider world that I never would have known had I not been invited to read so many amazing stories and look at some spectacular and inspiring photo’s and inspirational posts.

I know that blogging is definitely part of my life moving forward and therefore I  want to think about self hosting and developing the other ‘social media’ contacts e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc.  which I’m currently pretty rubbish at..

However, going ‘self hosted’ is becoming a bit of a ‘FEAR’ which I know I need to overcome, so I’ve been researching how to do it and rather than alleviate my ‘fear’ it’s making it worse.

I would hate to lose contact with the amazing people I’ve connected with this year and I’ve managed to claw myself up on Google Searches from ‘nowhere to be found’ up to page 2/3 (it alternates between the 2) if you search for Manchester Lifestyle Blogger.. I’m really chuffed to have done this without any ‘training’ and by just ‘having a go’.

My fear now is that going ‘self hosted’ may lose me the contacts I’ve established… Does anyone know if this is the case? I’ve heard that moving to, it’s possible to transfer contacts etc. across but then I read something about losing the ‘like’ facility… Ughhhh.. decisions, decisions… What should I do?

I’d love to hear some success stories where people have moved from to self hosted and how they found the experience and share some of the benefits and pitfalls to help me make my choice and hopefully overcome my FEAR!

If you’re aware of any helpful blog sites/posts or books etc. to help me with my research, or you have any tips and learning lessons that you’re willing to share, I’d LOVE to hear from you… (Only genuine bloggers please – not people trying to sell me a service..)

I’m hoping I can be inspired to achieve one of the ‘dreams’ on my Vision Dream Board for 2017 and maybe with your help I’ll overcome my ‘FEAR’….

I’m a great believer in ‘Feel the Fear and DO IT ANYWAY!’ which was the first ‘self help’ book I ever read… written by Suzanne Jeffers and definitely worth a read… Why you should ‘Fear Nothing’

I know this is therefore something for me to ‘just do’… but I’m needing a kick up the backside to make me take that ‘leap’ into the unknown! Hopefully somebody out there can GIVE ME THAT KICK!!! (not that I’ve got masochistic tendencies or anything but I do need a bit of a ‘shove’ now and again!)..

WHAT FEARS ARE HOLDING YOU BACK FROM ACHIEVING YOUR 2017 Goals? Maybe if we share our fears, this wonderful ‘blogging community’ can help each other to move forward and achieve their dreams!…. imagine…..

Hey Wendy, coming in late to this conversation but I wonder how your research is going. I looked into this a little while ago (my tech savvy son was trying to convince me of the merits of self hosting) but decided against it. I have similar concerns and also like the support that’s offered. When I had issues with spam, gremlins and the Reader a few months back the staff at WP were fantastic. I’m sure there’s merits to self hosting but for me it’s convenient and works well. Good luck with whatever you decide to do Wendy. Regardless, I’ll always follow you, where ever you go. Can’t get rid of me that easy! ? xo

Well I’m still of mixed views.. However, my sons girlfriend who is a more serious blogger ‘Sequin This’… tells me it’s a ‘must’ to go self hosted. She’s off holidaying in Austria on a ‘free’ skiing holiday … can’t be bad!! She inspired me to start up my blog last year and when she comes back off holiday she’s going to give me some suggestions so I’ll let you know.. Now if it meant losing you Miriam I’d definitely be staying on WordPress!! xx

      • January 11, 2017 / 12:50 am

Hmm, sounds like she might know a thing or two. My son says it’s the go as well but he’s so tech and IT savvy it astounds me. Maybe we both just need to take the plunge, though it feels like such a big step and I’m not sure I’m ready. Yes, please let me know. I’ll be very curious as to what she tells you. Oh and BTW you’ll never lose me! ? xo

Oh how exciting… we can explore it together and I’ll keep you updated with anything I find out… I’m not going to rush it but it’s definitely on my Vision Board for this year! And … phew I’m glad we’ll continue as ‘partners in crime’ together on our blogging journey.. or .. better still, to keep sprinkling our magic dust and having fun! xx

I have considered this myself as well but concluded that Im not ready as I need to put more time and energy into my site but I believe in you, Wendy! You have soared on here so far I have no doubt you will continue to ‘blossom with brilliance’ on your blog site!

    • January 6, 2017 / 10:13 pm

Ahh – thanks so much Victoria.. I’m not ‘rushing’ into this one and I’ll definitely keep you posted about how it goes if I do make that leap!.. Have a wonderful weekend! x

ps – I love that by the way ‘Blossom With Brilliance’ – would you mind if I do a meme with it on and I’ll link it back to your site?

My reply went off before I had it completed. I have been really happy with WordPress and also had advice that they are the best for folks like me. I think you will need to weigh up a lot of pros and cons first Wendy. It is a mighty big leap. ?
Will be interested to read more comments.

Yep – you’re right Brigid.. From what I’m gleaning, there’s a lot more research I need to do so I won’t be rushing off anytime soon! xx

Hi Debbie.. From what I’m gathering, this is going to take a lot of research if I want to get it right… so I won’t be dashing off anytime soon and will definitely keep you informed as I find anything out. Thanks for sending me your email and I’ll send you one so you’ve got mine too.. In the meantime, if you find anything out let me know… Much appreciated and a big hug whistling through the wind in your direction my friend! xx

I did the opposite: I started as self-hosted on a server in my house to eventually going to WordPress. Funny side story: I knew Matt (the founder of WordPress) when he was known as PhotoMatt in Houston. We talked about WordPress before it was a well-known thing (I actually told him I wasn’t a fan of it at the time) and he was very nice and took my criticisms and fixed them all! Fast forward about 10 years and I’m on WordPress because running my own server in the house was a full-time job in itself. Now, I could self-host with a hosting company, but now that I’m older, I like paying someone else to take care of the little things like guaranteeing uptime, maintaining patches and hotfixes and virus protection, etc. Good luck in whatever you decide, though!

    • January 5, 2017 / 3:51 pm

Hey – how brilliant and I bet that was interesting to know Matt .. to say the least! Yep – I definitely won’t be ‘self hosting on my own server.. I think people tend to use hosting companies but goodness only knows which one.. Yikes – now I’m erring ‘against’ it.. patches/hotfixes/virus protection – ughhhh!!! Cheers though – I’ll keep on researching.. Much appreciated xx

      • January 5, 2017 / 10:39 pm

So much to think about..but like u said there are companies like go daddy, bluehost… well let us know how it goes with your research… etc

        • January 6, 2017 / 12:14 am

I will Bella.. If I ever figure it out I’ll try and do a post to help others.. That’s ‘wishful thinking’ – I’m putting it out to the Universe to help me.. x

  7. January 5, 2017 / 1:10 pm

Good luck! I started long before blogging FB and other social media. I had , and still have, my own website (domain) but nowadays I mostly use WP

    • January 5, 2017 / 3:55 pm

Thanks for your encouragement.. I’m struggling with all the FB etc. as although I use FB personally, I want it to be separated for my ‘blog’ and somehow I’ve cocked up my set up for ‘Brilliance Within’ and now can’t backtrack it.. hey ho .. I’ll get there – one step at a time! x

      • January 5, 2017 / 10:41 pm

Umm facebook is a cant separate from your personal..unless you create another personal account and then create a page. Oh fb..i have struggled … but i have a page on fb… i dont get fb though

        • January 6, 2017 / 12:13 am

I know you’re right – it’s a PAIN! and I’ve really got into a muddle with it now because it won’t let me delete the page I started to set up and it’s all a big muddle!

  8. January 5, 2017 / 12:37 pm

Yeah is supposed to be better.. you tube is a good source… but i would start wp support engineers they are helpful and you are paying for support on your site

  9. January 5, 2017 / 12:34 pm

I can see that you dont have a free wordpress account. I would then suggest speak to the wordpress support team and ask what is involved from their side, what advice they give, what hosting platform they advice. Costs, timeline to switch over, what can go wrong, is there a need for data transfer ie how do your current post get transferedetc. With that info research some more and you will then have a few questions for the wordpress support team. I would get info and repeat then come up with a plan.. also i dont know if they can help you with web design or you need to get a web designer ?

I am not self hosted but these are some questions i would ask the wordpress support team as they would a good place to start your research and i would start my research this way. And would be quite deliberately patient with the research.

I am not ready to self host ..i cant even keep a posting schedule or find time to write stuff…lol

All the best. Hopefully someone who is self hosted will give better advice than i have. Bella

    • January 5, 2017 / 12:51 pm

Wow Bella!! That’s fabulous advice as a brilliant starting point… thanks so much. I’d never thought about asking WordPress themselves… Ddddd! I’ve never used their support lines so never thought about them. I will now though.. VERY Much appreciated! Your posts are always brilliant by the way x

      • January 5, 2017 / 1:02 pm

I am not a natural writer ..getting better. I use wp for all my

This kind of thing is kinda linked to my day job a business analyst/functional analyst of an erp Hr system… so i know how to start stuff and thats why i say make sure you take time to breathe as there will be a lot to consider..but should be doeable… and ask all your fears to them as well… you might be surprised could accommodate more than one might think. And as a customer who they will want to keep in someway they might be super duper helpful…play it smart

        • January 5, 2017 / 3:56 pm

You’re so lovely Bella – thanks for all your support and suggestions which are brilliant and very much appreciated! x
