Fashion Ideas: A Casual Look For a 50+ Manchester Lifestyle Blogger

Fashion Ideas: A Casual Look For a 50+ Manchester Lifestyle Blogger

I’ve done a number of searches for 50+ year old Manchester Lifestyle Bloggers and I’m sure there must be other Manchester Fashion & Lifestyle bloggers age 50+  out there but I’ve not come across many yet.

So, I’m taking the bull by the horns and putting out a ‘Casual Outfit’ post for over 50’s and I’d love to hear your thoughts on the outfit… (hubby thinks I’ve now lost the plot when I asked him to take these photo’s, so I couldn’t complain about them not being ‘full length!!)

Skinny Jeans

With my recent weight loss I think I can just about get away with skinny jeans once more. These casual grey skinny jeans are from Marks & Spencer and cost £25.00. They’re really comfortable to wear, having some ‘lycra’ for that extra ‘flexibility and comfort’.. I can’t be doing with feeling like I’m wearing a corset and I need some ‘flex’ to enable me to play with my gorgeous granddaughters!

I have to admit that these jeans are popped in regularly for an overnight wash & dry so that they are ready again for the next day. They’ve definitely been worth every penny! Maybe I should just by another pair!!

For me, Grey is the new Black and I definitely prefer the grey jeans to my blue ones now as I can wear most colour tops with grey including ‘black’ tops and therefore I find them to be more versatile when putting an outfit together.

Sainsubury’s TU Range

The top I’m wearing is a ‘lightweight jumper’ and was a great find in Sainsbury’s Tu Range of clothing at a cost of around £16.00. I think it’s pretty flattering and it’s not too clingy! With the centre black lace panel and the ‘overshirt effect, I find it detracts from my extra midriff ‘rolls’ (although – yep I know, I still need to lose more of those extra pounds!!).

This top is proving to be really ‘wearable’ and it feels great over the grey jeans. I find it avoids me having to ask that age old question “Does My Bum Look Big In This?”, as the extra length of the ‘shirt effect’ covers a multitude of sins!! My hubby has learned the hard way not to be ‘too honest’ when answering this question!! haha…

This top can also be dressed up for a smarter look by wearing it over smart black trousers for a trip into Central Manchester to one of the fabulous bars or restaurants…

I’m very tempted to go on a hunt for some leather look jeggings to go with this top too.. I’ve seen a few comments recently about leather only being for ‘younger’ people, but I do think you can wear leather at any age – What are your thoughts on 50+ and the leather look – and should age even be a consideration?

Casual Jacket

Primark hasn’t been on my list of ‘go to’ stores previously, as I was put off years ago when it first opened in London and before it reached the North, when I went into a London Store and the queue’s were horrific.. However, I recently had to go into a Manchester store with my daughter in law, and was pleasantly surprised at some of the fab clothes on offer and NO QUEUE (well not much of one..).

I couldn’t resist purchasing this cosy jacket, which is proving really useful now the weather has turned ‘chilly’ here in Manchester! The sheepskin effect round the edges feels lovely and cosy. I was really pleased that it’s got that ‘on trend’ look whilst not being fully lined as we ladies over 50 do still get some occasional ‘hot flushes’ and with my extra pounds still to lose, I would look like ten tonne Tessy, if it was full lined with the sheepskin.

So this jacket was perfect for me and wow – what a BARGAIN at only £16.00!!! Yep £16.00 !!! I couldn’t believe how cheap this was and yet the quality is great. I compared it to some similar ‘jackets’ in M&S and they were at least double the price and quality wise felt no better.

I’ve heard this week that M&S may be closing some stores and with the competition they must be getting from stores like Primark, I’m really not surprised, although I will be really sorry to see them go, as to be fair I do buy quite a lot of my clothes from M&S..

Value For Money?

So all in all this outfit cost me less than £60.00 in total and is proving to be one of my favourite Casual Autumn Outfits for those weekend trips to the park with Dolly (my dog) and my granddaughters!

I’d love to hear what you think about this outfit and about whether at age 56 I should be steering clear of the ‘leather look’!! Please leave me a comment below…

Also – If you’re a UK ‘over 50’ blogger, it would be brilliant to hear from you as I’m struggling to find many similar UK and particularly Manchester bloggers to share ideas with on my Google Searches…

You look fabulous Wendy. I love your outfit. I am a big fan of grey too as it suits me better than black and I can mix it easily with Brights. We have Penneys here in Ireland (same as Primark). It is such a godsend!

    • November 8, 2016 / 10:41 am

Yes – I love grey in clothes and in furnishings too as you’re right – it’s a great backdrop for any colour.. Primark is definitely on my list of ‘go to’s’ in future.. I was really impressed! Thanks for the great feedback which is very much appreciated xx

You look awesome Wendy. Love the colour, style and fit, both in pants and jacket. And with a gorgeous smile to boot, way to go girl! I’m the same vintage as you and love my greys and blacks, skinny jeans and stylish jackets. I bought a shirt leather black jacket for my last birthday and think it’s going to turn into a timeless classic. Fun enjoyable post. xo

    • November 8, 2016 / 9:51 am

Same ‘vintage’ – love it. I’m encouraged now to go on the hunt for some leather to add to my wardrobe!! That’s what we are.. Timeless Classics’….. Thanks for the compliments too – I wasn’t feeling confident about this post and have received some lovely compliments which have boosted my ego no end.. xx

Hey Wendy, you know that the fifties are now referred to as the Frisky fifties don’t you? ๐Ÿ˜Š Go buy that leather. xo

        • November 8, 2016 / 10:46 am

I’m going for it… Frisky at 50 (well on the road to 60 but let’s not dwell on that one!!)… Bryan will be pleased! hehe.. I did a very early post when I first started the blog (not very good…) but I loved the line ‘Fun & Flirty Not Frumpy at Fifty!’… Yep – leather’s ‘in’!xx

          • November 8, 2016 / 10:55 am

            Haha. I love that line . โค๏ธ๐Ÿ˜

This is great. I love the gray skinny jeans, and you’re right, they can be paired with just about any color. That can make your wardrobe much more versatile. I also like the lace embellishment on the top. I don’t think the leather look is just for younger people. I think leather is for people who look good in leather–regardless of age. I have had such a difficult time finding good fashion advice for our age group. I did a Google search last year and couldn’t really find a lot that was specific to the 50+ age group. I’m glad you’re taking the lead on this. I know I appreciate it. Since I’m in the US, we don’t have all the same clothing stores, but the pictures and details you show offer great style ideas, and you look wonderful. I don’t mind being over 50 and occasionally shopping at the Forever-21 clothing store, but I would love to see and get ideas about what the women closer to my own age group are wearing. Thanks for sharing that opportunity. ๐Ÿ‘š๐Ÿ‘—๐Ÿ‘–๐Ÿ˜Š

Wow – that’s a lovely comment and brilliant feedback. I wondered if it would be poorly received so your comments are just what I needed to give me the confidence to do some more fashion and makeup posts. I’m considering trying some vlogging posts for makeup too. Thanks so much for taking the time to write this comment which will spur me on to do some more tips and ideas for 50+’s ! Very much appreciated! xx

      Thanks very much! x

  7. November 7, 2016 / 10:27 pm

Wendy, such a fun post.. great fashion for a great price. You certainly dont look your age…. shame about not getting a full shot.. lol well at least your hubby took a few decent shots for your post…

    Very enjoyable and fun

    • November 7, 2016 / 11:13 pm

Yep – Cheap and Cheerful – and proud of it! I’m a ‘non designer’ type of gal… well most of the time – never say never! x I had to bribe hubby with a full breakfast to get him to take the photo’s and then he laughed at me throughout… no wonder I’m smiling! Glad you enjoyed the fun.. x

        • November 8, 2016 / 4:54 am

Hopefully I can show some good ‘non designer’ looks for winter… I was a bit wary about doing this post but the lovely comments I’ve received are encouraging me to do more.. Thank you! xx

  8. November 7, 2016 / 9:48 pm

I love what you are wearing. Thanks for the tips.

    • November 7, 2016 / 9:50 pm

Thanks so much for the thumbs up! Much appreciated! x

Looking good Wendy, for 68…๐Ÿ˜ On a more serious note: It really suits you and you look swell-hot to trot! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

    • November 7, 2016 / 9:08 pm

Haha – I’d expect nothing less Mr PPP!!! hot to trot – Love it! xx

  10. November 7, 2016 / 8:05 pm

You look great Wendy! I love my grey jeans too. As for leather, I don’t believe it’s a matter of age but of your personal taste. If you like it, go for it!

    • November 7, 2016 / 9:09 pm

I’ll post a pic when I find some I like then! Very much appreciated! x

  11. November 7, 2016 / 7:43 pm

Tu es vachement trรจs chic! 50+ or whatever number you look amazing – though I can’t resist imagining the footwear is a sheepskin bedroom slipper given your husband’s resistance to a full length shot. though of course that was actually because he wanted to focus on his favourite bits which surely include that dazzling smile ๐Ÿ™‚ BTW I crested the hillock to being nearer to 60 than 50 in September too – great vintage ๐Ÿ˜‰ x

    • November 7, 2016 / 9:14 pm

Haha – You could be right Osyth… Although to be fair I did actually have shoes on…for a change as I was really going out shopping and decided spur of the moment to snap some shots. Now bloggers who do the ‘fashion thing’ seriously will probably have a lot of shots taken.. I had a choice of 3 shots and used 2 of them… I need to enrol a ‘willing photographer’ hehe..
Fancy us being the same vintage – Fab! – Obviously a great year for quality! x

  12. November 7, 2016 / 7:37 pm

Great outfit, really into grey this season, very trendy and stylish in a great casual manner………………perfect !!

    • November 7, 2016 / 9:18 pm

Me too – I seem to be filling my whole house with grey – furnishings to match the outfits – At least I can ‘blend into the background’ of the sofa! haha. xx

  13. November 7, 2016 / 7:19 pm

You look great. Definitely no where near 50.

    • November 7, 2016 / 7:29 pm

Thanks Trav… well after my birthday in September, I’m now closer to 60 than 50 so it’s all ‘south’ from here!! Thanks for the great compliment though – VERY much appreciated! x

        • November 7, 2016 / 9:17 pm

I just won’t do any photo’s that are ‘too close up’ as I wouldn’t want to spoil the illusion with the wrinkles!! haha x

          • November 7, 2016 / 10:17 pm

            Lol. You’ll be fine.

          • November 7, 2016 / 10:20 pm

            Thanks – I definitely don’t recommend anyone over 50 to buy a 10+ magnification mirror.. it’s terrifying! haha x

      • November 7, 2016 / 7:46 pm

Hey Wendy, i created a post to collect responses to the question: what is your favorite meal or dessert?.

Could you please go on my blog and tell me what ur favorite meal or dessert is by commenting on the first post, when u get a chance?

        • November 7, 2016 / 9:09 pm

I’m popping across now… thanks for the heads up! x

  14. November 7, 2016 / 7:17 pm

You look fabulous, styled, and comfortable. Your smile is icing. I’m sixty plus, and I never lose the fashion plot when I don a pair of leather, pleather, or jeans of a different color. As long as everything I’d rather not expose is all tucked in, I’m good. At this stage, it’s all about comfort. Thankfully, there’s plenty on offer that makes the older woman look super fantastic. OF course, at this point, we know that being comfortable in our own skin first is probably the better way around outer wear. Still, dressing for impressing in our own mirrors makes for a great day out. Thanks for mentioning some of the UK stores I fondly remember from my frequent visits. We have H&M at most major malls here. In my opinion, they stock some of the best fashion trends around.

    • November 7, 2016 / 7:28 pm

Thanks Jen – I really appreciate this comment on my first ‘fashion post’ and you’re absolutely right – confidence from within is absolutely key… although a few ‘cover ups’ come in handy too! Did you visit the UK for holidays? We are pretty lucky in the UK with some great low cost and higher cost fashion stores.. something for everyone! x

      • November 7, 2016 / 7:40 pm

I used to live in Scotland for about 4 years. From there I traveled to England, and I knew I would love it. I’ve even been to Manchester, but couldn’t tell you exactly where. I always knew I wanted to visit the UK. I used to have a pen pal living there named Martyn. He was just a friend, but he made sure I had clippings of all the major events like the Royal Wedding. One Christmas he sent me tarts. I was in love!!! I hope to visit again in the future; at least I dream of doing so. I could actually live there, then travel even further abroad as I have done in the past. A blast!

        • November 7, 2016 / 9:16 pm

Oh wow – that sounds like you had a real adventure Jen… And a new one for the future hopefully! I look forward to seeing you back in Manchester soon – that would be a blast! x

    • November 7, 2016 / 7:31 pm

ps – You don’t look 60+ Jen – definitely a case of your as old as you feel and it’s often ‘in the mind’.. I remember my grandma’s generation suddenly changing how they dressed when they reached 40.. We definitely have more freedom to wear what we fancy now rather than being restricted. You look fab! x

      • November 7, 2016 / 7:43 pm

Thanks. I know I’m 61, but when I spend so much much time with people [some over 100], it’s easy to feel young. Besides…Times have changed. We are getting older, and as I’ve heard said…better!

        • November 7, 2016 / 9:21 pm

Most definitely better Jen.. It sounds like you have a worthwhile role supporting some older people… I’ve in older people’s services as well for several years – I love speaking to them and hearing all about their adventures over the years.. x

  15. November 7, 2016 / 7:17 pm

I think you look lovely! Very stylish, Primark is worth trying for men’s cardigans. The jeans are very cool too, definitely liking grey as an alternative ๐Ÿ™‚

    • November 7, 2016 / 7:18 pm

Fab – glad you like it Samantha and I’ll definitely be having a trip back to Primark in the near future.. I saw quite a few bits and pieces I could’ve bought.. x
